Goals to police interrogations: to obtain a confession and gather relevant information on the case at hand. Police must work within these regulations: right to counsel and to be informed of this right without delay, right to remain silent, right to a telephone call (as many as possible to obtain and inform counsel) Reid model: the most common training program in canada and united states. Minimization techniques: police officer conducting the interrogation uses soft sell tactics that lull the suspect into a false sense of security. Example: she had it coming to her did everyone a favor by killing them . Maximization techniques: police interrogators use the scare tactics as designed to intimidate the suspect who is believed to be guilty. Example: false claims about evidence, exaggerating the seriousness of the offence. To be admissible in a courtroom a confession must of come out voluntary as well as in a competent state of mind at the time of confession.
