Document Summary

Eyewitness testimony is one of the most compelling types of evidence presented in criminal trials. A large part of this testimony rests on memory. Memory: encoding (when you perceive and pay attention to detail to your environment) happens first. The encoding information then passes into your short-term holding facility, aka your short-term memory. This place has limited capacity, so in order for you to make room for new incoming info, the memory goes into long-term memory. Info here can be accessed or retrieved when needed. Stm lgt retrieval: not all info will go through all stages, factors can affect each stage. Memory can change each time we retrieve the event. Eyewitness memory retrieval can be partitioned into recall memory (reporting details of a previously witnessed event or person) and recognition memory (determining whether a previously seen item or person is the same as what is currently being viewed).
