PSYC 2307 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Visual Field Test, Visual Acuity, Sigmund Freud
Document Summary
Much of what we know about the world is learned through our visual system; this system takes up much of the human brain. Visual perception co-evolved with the increased specialization of forelimbs. Visual information processing occurs in many parts of the brain; therefore, disorders of visual perception are often encountered in patients with brain damage. Ophthalmology: physicians who specialize in diagnosing and treating diseases of the eye. Neuro-opthalmology: ophthalmologists who specialize in diseases affecting the neural aspects of the peripheral visual system. Neuropsychology: higher level visual dysfunctions such as visual agnosia. Typically studies higher level losses in visual perception resulting from dysfunction at higher levels within the visual system than the retinol-geniculo-cortical pathway. There are three different categories of tests of visual function; Tests of central vision vision near the fixation point or center of gaze; visual acuity, colour vision, contrast sensitivity, etc. : i. e. a vision test that you do in the doctors office.
