Document Summary

Psyc 2307 organization of human sensory systems. Sensory receptors bring info into nervous system: specialized cells transducing, or converting sensory energy into neural activity (in some cases replacing dendritic component of neuron) Receptors = specific: respond only to certain types mechanical, chemical, or electromagnetic energy. Specific receptor types associated w/ specific sensory & perceptual systems within brain. Not all sensory signals ends up in cerebral cortex. Not all sensory signals intrude into consciousness. Rapidly adapting receptors: detect when something"s there, easily activated, but stop responding quickly. Slowly adapting receptors: adapt more slowly to stimulation. Receptors make it possible to distinguish self from other: Interoceptive: receptors responding to internal stimuli, help interpret meaning of external stimuli. Optic flow: stimulus configuration or visual info when we run. Auditory flow: changes in intensity of sound b/c of our changing location. Higher density of sensory receptors leads to increased sensitivity. Two-point sensitivity: ability to recognize presence of 2 pencil points close together.
