Unpleasant sensory or emotional experience associated with actual or. There are different types: sharp, dull, burning, aching. Promote learning to avoid the same situation later. Nociceptors carry information to spinal cord and brain. Send motor signals back to fix the situation. Signal less likely to capture attention but more likely to affect emotions. Often perceived as coming from other parts of the body. Pain is not just the result of a linear process from sensory stimuli. Pain is modulated by both the spinal cord and brain. Small a-delta and c-fibre activity opens a gate. Large a-beta fibre activity closes the gate to inhibit pain processes. Acute pain: temporary, lasts less than 6 months. Recurrent: intermittent pain and lasts more than 6 months. Chronic pain: lasts longer than 6 months and increases over time. Effects of chronic pain: sleep disturbances, loss of activities, mood disturbances, loss of job, family and social stress. Pain can be perceived in absence of nociception.
