Health psych september 16 th : systems of the body. Comprised of a very complex system of nerve fibers. Consists of the brain and spinal cord. Brain is contained in the cranial cavity. Spinal cord is contained in the spinal cavity. Brain it protected by the skull (a hard, rigid bone) Brain is soaked in csf basic things that a brain needs to work (water, sodium, potassium, minerals and ions, and glucose; bathe the brain, make it happy, provide basic ingredients) Spinal cord (also bathed in csf) is protected by vertebrae (they"re stacked; embedded in the middle is a network of nerves which is the spinal cord) Carries voluntary nerve impulses to the skeletal muscles and skin. Carries involuntary impulses to muscles and glands. If you were to stick your finger in the brain, it has a very squishy/jelly consistency you don"t want to poke it; it"s weak which is why it"s protected by the skull.
