Health compromising behaviour: habitual, addictive and negative effects, undermine current/future health - but can be modified with help. Addiction: physical dependence: body made changes and adjusted into functioning, tolerance(up intake bc body adjusted), withdrawal (negative symptoms when trying to stop, psychological dependence: adjust to feel good, compelled and strong desire. Substance use disorder: 2 or more characteristics, failing to fulfill important obligations, putting oneself/others at risk for physical injury, having substance related legal difficulties. Factors associated with substance use and abuse: reinforcement, consequence(pleasant introduced or negative removed) increases behaviour, quick effects, eventual use for cognitive and emotional regulation, avoiding withdrawal, delirium tremens - anxiety, tremors, hallucinations. Substance related cues(classical conditioning: pairings of events with substance use = cravings, cues produce cravings. Incentive sensitization theory - dopamine enhances stimuli: expectancies. Impulsive, risk takers, sensation seeking, self regulation: genetics. Identical twins more similar in addicted behaviour than fraternal twins. Smoking: 61% of males smoked - 1965.
