Psyc 2301 chapter 2: the systems of the body. *all content belongs to tarry ahuja & where cited in lecture slides* Comprised of very complex system of nerve fibers. Organized into 2 main sections: central nervous system (cns), peripheral nervous system (pns) Cns: *diagram in lecture slide: consists of brain & spinal cord, brain contained in cranial cavity; spinal cord contained in spinal activity, brain protected by skull; spinal cord protects by vertebrae. Consists of 3 sections: hindbrain, midbrain, forebrain. Hindbrain: medulla: mediates heart rate, blood pressure, & co2/o2 concentration, pons: link b/w hindbrain & midbrain, & helps control respiration, cerebellum: coordinates voluntary muscle movement, balance/equilibrium, muscle tone & posture. Midbrain: relay of sensory & motor info b/w forebrain & hindbrain, visual & auditory reflexes, production of da in substantia nigra. Involved in higher order intelligence, memory, personality: processing of sensory & motor info, ramon cajal cell bodies & dendrites.
