Document Summary
Salem witch trials: children were used as witnesses, said they had seen women performing bizarre activities, during/after the witch trials, children recanted their statements. Early 1900s research: high incidence of distorted memories in children, dangerous witnesses. 1980s-1990s north america: martensville babysitting case (saskatchewan) Noticed a rash on child, suspected abuse from the babysitting service. Allegations made against woman who ran babysitting service. Forced to drink blood, put in freezers, etc. Interviews were leading, offering insight into how they wanted children to answer. Son was found guilty of molestation not severely enough to resemble what police were being told by children: mcmartin preschool case (california) No evidence to support allegations made by children: renewed interest in research. Many gaps in knowledge, don"t know how reliable children are. Children are not unreliable, have accurate testimonies of offence. Children were thought to be unreliable/detrimental to court cases.
