PSYC 1002 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Social Perception
Document Summary
Whenever you interact with others you try and derive information from them and this influences our perception of them. Social categorizing theory: whenever we are in a specific social environment we have to understand personal sense from it. We classify the environment by dividing it into different categories. They do this by using criteria"s. once the social environment is divided then attributes can be applied to members of each division. You then expect each person to behave within the role or attributes you have given them. Ex: some criteria could be social role, gender, race. Accentuation effect: once the division is made we will perceive the categories in different ways and exaggerating their differences between groups and exaggerating the similarities within members of one category. In group bias: we always are going to make decisions that favour our group and discriminate against others. So we favour people who are more like us.
