Freud - most of our thoughts are out of our awareness (thoughts, desires, emotions that may be unacceptable to your conscious mind) Medical - our consciousness has been interrupted by some medical condition/trauma but the body may still show some level of reactivity. Activity and processing that just beneath the surface of our awareness (dreams, automatic processes) Typing - you are not aware of typing each letter, although you could think about them. Daydreaming - letting your mind wander, and automatic processing requires minimal attention eg. riding a bike. Metacognition - thinking about your own thinking processes. Any mental state that is di erent from normal - due to fatigue, drugs, trauma, etc. Anything that is out of the ordinary from your day to day functioning. During sleep we are not unconscious we are in a state of altered consciousness. Given that sleep is almost universal it he animal kingdom it must therefore serve some useful function.
