PSYC 1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Naturalistic Observation, Experiment, Artificiality
Document Summary
Scientific method: systematic procedure observing and measuring phenomena to answer questions. Communicate findings (whether you find something out or not) Theory (model of interconnected ideas, concepts that explain what is observed and make predictions about future events, if theory is not supported it is amended) Hypothesis (question or prediction) testable vs non-testable i. e non-testable; like astrology, freud"s theory of psychoanalysis and testable; pet therapy for ptsd. Analyze data and draw conclusions rare data will behave in the same way you predicted. Report findings important and significant (peer review article) Experimental group: group being experimented on/recieves treatment. Control group: normal group being compared to/ Extraneous variables *could ruin results i. e has add, older more experienced driver, type of phone used, weather conditions, prior car accident history. ***time of day that studies are done effects results. Random assignment: if you don"t randomly assign people doing the experiment, you already controlled it.
