PSYC 1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Hypnotic Susceptibility, Sleep Deprivation, Theta Wave
Document Summary
Awareness of internal and external events is constantly changing. Altered state of consciousness: bizarre, disorganized or dreamlike state of consciousness. Different patterns of electrical activity are associated with different states of consciousness. Depends on if you have eaten, had your coffee, etc (depends on the person) Controlled: greater conscious effort, slow (take more energy because your totally focusing on it) Ex: driving the car the first time vs years later. Nonconscious: processes that occur in the body (autonomic ns) Preconscious: outside of conscious awareness but can be brought into consciousness on demand (thinking about reading week after asing) Unconscious: (freud talks about this) experiences, ideas and motives that are threatening, and removed from consciousness. (ex: driving home and you turn a different was and you don"t know why) How do they differ: coma allows people to live after severe injuries.
