PSCI 3402 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Mary Ann Glendon, Economic Globalization, New Public Management
Document Summary
Pluralism*- in the text, miljan does not refer to it as bridge theory, but instead as a dynamic theory. I consider pluralism is a bridge between dynamism and structuralism. Why? because it retains the dynamism of dynamic models and the structural insights of structural models: Individual behaviour perpetuates the system, while the system perpetuates individual behaviour. The theory came from the observation that interest groups and lobbyists had tangible influence on policy making (obvious in us, less obvious in. Essentially, it noted that groups from outside government were able to inform policies inside government. Pluralism is based on the observation that interest groups influence the outcome of policy decisions. Democracies have to be minimally responsive to their populations. Individuals are just as important to policy analysis as political parties. Ideas are a key determinant of policy: cleavages between groups are due to different ideas, opinions, worldviews, etc.
