Two perspectives as to where we came from: Middle ages europe had multiple layers of authority. This system was quite unstable due to shifting alliances. Different interests with politics and religion (eg. the king vs. the pope) The thirty years war: a religious and political war between catholics and protestants o. Protestants wanted independent german states, free from the holy roman empire: was essentially a war between revisionists and the status quo o. Status quo wanted to keep secular power over the german states and keep catholic hegemony o o. Reduction in german population was around 25 - 40% Swedish army destroyed 2000 castles, 18,000 villages, and 1500 towns. Two treaties were signed, together they were known as the peace of westphalia. The peace of westphalia: allowed german states their independence o o o. This brought about the principle of territorial sovereignty o o. The idea that the state is a supreme governing authority within its territorial boundaries.
