Lecture 2 introduction: spiritual crisis and the athenian. Western civilization rests on two pillars: greek and greek things (among them politics and philosophy, hebraism and hellenism. Logos = word/speech/reason/the way = a rational account. Therefore, it"s a rational account of everything. Think/ reason: overworld (god, world (man) Boundaries are about possibility and limitation (where they meet) Culture comes from cultus: are provincial, have a hard boundary (surrounded by one) Entail certain initiations (i. e. language, customs, perceptions ways of saying things, doing things, seeing things) Civilization made up of multiple cultures. Universalized expanding: need to make cultures more universal, homogenous means to make them more alike. Cultures need to be made more universalized and homogenized. We have ways of seeing things and doing things (certain perceptions and practices) Therefore we have ideas of what people within certain boundaries care about (what most concerns them) What people care about even when it does affect them: influences way people behave and act.
