Book 3 foundation/education: founding ideal city in speech. Must have justice in your city before you have it in your citizens. One must see the good in obeying the law and have them internalized, rather than have them enforced by police. Must go into heart/soul/mind of citizens to create the just city: original/feverish city. Need guardians to guard the state from internal factions and external enemies. Must educate noble dogs to be allies who won"t take over or stage a coup: mixing music/gymnastics (phil/warrior) Important forms of education are music (soft, philosophical education) and gymnastics (hard, strong warriors). It"s the perfect blend of both: testing and selection produces social classes. Guardians have to be selected by merit. Tested and put through hardship to be best of best. Elite based on meritocracy which makes it legitimate. Selected based on dedication to state and not own interest. Top: rulers/statesmen who are good at legislation, deciding, judging.
