The state refers to the government organization itself that carry out political/legal decisions: also used for territory. Regime deals with who is in charge of the state who makes the decisions, etc. We look at the process by which leadership is chosen, stays in power, and succession (how it is replaced) Conditions for which leadership stays in power, and who they are. A regime change is a drastic change in leadership in a regime (e. g. , army seizing power: regime change does not equal state failure. Leader changes and how the process in which leader is chosen changes. Totalitarianism: aren"t many totalitarian regimes left. Robert dahl used polyarchy to describe democracies because he thought there were no existing perfect democracies on earth. 3 important characteristics of democracy: people choose government: done through elections which offer real choices had to be competitive. Had to be possibility that any party can win.
