Document Summary

Thomas nagel"s discussion in of the absurdity of life and his critique of camus. Emphasizes distinction between subjective and objective in his philosophy. According to angel in his writing, characterization of the absurd is not accurate. The absurd is not a clash or disharmony between what we humans want and what reality provides. Rather, the absurdity involves two di erent perspectives within us. Subjectively, from the inside, our lives seem important and we take them seriously. Objectively, viewed from a distance, they seem trivial and unimportant. Philosophical absurdity results from our ability to take an objective stance outside of our immediate lives from which our lives then appear trivial. But subjectively we have no chance but to take our lives seriously. Nagel"s view is not so di erent from camus. Camus notes that most of the time we are not aware of, don"t notice the absurdity of life.
