When rediscovered by europeans via arabic philosophy in the middle ages, he was referred to as simply the philosopher. The purpose of the nicomachean ethics (ne) is to discover the supreme. He is going to conclude that the supreme good is happiness in conformity with virtue(behavior high moral standards:patience , moderation , bravery , honesty). Every art, investigation or practice aims at some good, and the purpose of the ne is to discover the supreme good at which all things aim.
