NEUR 3403 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Morning Sickness, White Adipose Tissue, Paraventricular Nucleus Of Hypothalamus
Document Summary
Best known and most important hormone ; cortisol, released from adrenal cortex. A little of something is okay vs a lot of something could be bad. When you stress the first thing that happens is that the prefrontal cortex picks up the signal. Anterior cingulate cortex involved in decision making and to make appraisals of emotionally painful stimuli the pfc sends fibers to the amygdala to calm it down (inhibitory fiber) Within the hypothalamus (paraventricular nucleus activated by the amygdala sends norepinephrine. Crh is released: goes to pituitary gland and causes acth (adreno cortico tropic hormone) to be released into the blood stream, reaches adrenal gland and releases cortisol. Cortisol keeps hitting receptors on the hippocamp and it gets tired and cant be excited. Unable to tell the hypothalamus to tell it to stop and thus hypothalamus will keep releasing cortisol: symptoms such as dementia will occur because the hippocampus is being affected too much (allostatic overload)
