[1] monday january 9th 2017 : lecture #1: introduction & foundation. No textbook; unique class but no real book to cover everything. Brain has evolved to integrate information from the environment from others and allows us to respond. Childhood maltreatment leads to altered functional connectivity. Without being social we have not survived. Self & others & the environment around you. The environment plays a role in modifying the brain - integrate information from the environment. Everyone"s brain is similar; but with further analysis there has been alterations - e. g. childhood experiences can affect gene expression - sex differences on the brain. Different images; parents and their babies - solid family unit, generally there are more infant happiness; more care = brain develops more resilience to stressors. Child from orphanage - children neglected; lack of care, starved - as they grew up they were never able to form attachments b/c they lacked attachments as children growing up in orphanages (romania)
