Midterm: know fmri and eeg, know results of studies. If you increase serotonin you increase latency to sexual behaviour. It sounds like dopamine and serotonin do opposite things to sexual behaviour. Study- put cannula (metal tube) into nac and lateral hypothalamus: microdialysis. Diffuse 5-ht into lh: dopamine increased in nac during copulation. 5-ht in lh reduces nac dopamine: serotinin in hypothalamus reduces dopamine in nac. Serotonin not just for sex: serotonin most commonly known for role in depression. Truth: ssris also typically affect ne and/or da. Fluoxetine (prozac), zybutrimine, clonapine: canada: 86 in 100 on antidepressants (9mil to 16mil 1999-2003) Prescribed for longer periods of time and for less severe depression. Study: effects of different ssris on sexual functioning, fluoxetine (prozac, bupropion (zyban/wellbutrin) Smoking cessation, antidepressant as well: 456 depressed patients matched for age and sex. Assess depression scores and sexual functioning for 8 weeks: orgasmic dysfunction: Placebo level by end of 8 weeks: % with worse sexual function.
