Lecture 5 animal ethics (guest speaker dr. kerri nielsen) How animals are used in research: breeding genetically modified (gm) animals, research to understand the body in health & illness, medicines research & development, medicines safety testing. It is a term to describe human0animal relationships & how animals ought to be treated: subject matter includes, animal rights, animal welfare, animal law, speciesism, animal cognition, wildlife conservation, main debate = animal welfare vs. animal rights. Inconclusive: animal experiments do not provide definitive data about human responses: expensive and slow. In drug development, preclinical studies is a stage of research that begins before clinical trials: the main goals of pre-clinical studies = to determine the safe dose for clinical trials and start to assess product"s safety profile. Products may include new or iterated or like-kind medical devices, drugs, gene therapy solutions, etc: a combined effort of universities, research institutes, hospitals, pharmaceutical & biotech companies, and government.
