Document Summary

Created a shift from live music and sheet music to recording. Mass produced sheet music was a thing in late 19th and early 20th century. It was much easier to mass produce then records. Songs were played in venues and then the sheet music was purchased afterwards. The piano was by far the most popular instrument. Tpa got its name from lots of pianos playing at once. Goal of this genre was to write music for the people. Tried to keep the music simplistic enough for people at home to play them, so that they would purchase the music sheets. Innovation and virtuosity was not sold enough, standardisation therefore was common and many songs drew off each other or had similar melodies. The songs were often more popular than the musicals, people went to go hear the music not necessarily the play. The biggest effect of this transition was how audience listened to this music.
