Genres can be seen as a form of standardization since many songs and artists within a particular genre may sound the same and/or share similar elements. Borrowing of codes is common and it results in the development of new genres. Looks to see if a genre can have longevity. Disco is example of a genre that was simply a fad. It has influenced many other genres but has since died. Contrast with punk which has lived the test of time and still has a wide fanbase today. Genres within rock: punk rock, alt rock, indie rock. Sub genres within metal: progressive, black, death, doom, thrash. Not unique to artistic form that rely on technology. Technology doesn"t need to be used to appropriate. Dettmar saw this as a remix of painting.
