Displacing the natural accent from a strong beat to a weak beat or between beats. Gives an unexpected bounce or lift to the music. Has been used throughout the history of music: tempo. Composers usually provide a tempo marking to indicate the appropriate speed. Three basic instructions available to alter the tempo. Rubato: extending time on only one beat. A series of notes arranged in order to form a distinctive, recognizable unit. Pitch: the relative position, high or low, of a musical sound, melody composed of individual pitches, tone: sound with a definite, consistent pitch.
