The three confounds that complicate the theory of productivity are diachrony, creativity and selection. First, through a diachronic explanation, one that is historical, productivity becomes more complicated because while some affixes are currently productive, others exist in language because they were productive historically, but are no longer productive. For example, the pattern of tense used in sing, sang sung is not productive, but is still used as a product of diachrony. Second, creativity is a confound of productivity, because words that were produced in this way are not a function of grammar. People have the ability to create new words using affixes that are not productive. These words are noticeable and were created intentionally.
