Know ideas in red for the midterm* not going to have to ind them in a sentence, just know the idea. Meaning of larger expressions depends on the meanings of their parts. This is what makes producivity possible: syntax semanics. John morning up get, eat with cream cheese bagel, cofee too hot drink now therefore thermos put, and riding bus on to school. Similar meaning, diferent syntax: eat vs. devour; fear vs. frighten. Consituency: sentences are not beads on a string. I want more intelligent administrators: consituents are smaller expressions out of which larger ones are constructed. Each consituent has one and only one head: the central, obligatory part. Non-head parts of the consituent are modiiers. In noun-noun compounds, heads are the iniial elements. In garden gnome, the head is gnome, and garden is a modiier. In gnome garden, the head is garden, and gnome is a modiier. Noun phrase (np) a noun with a bunch of stuf around it.
