Myth of chivalry neglects women"s experience as victims of crime, women are vast majority of victims of domestic violence and sexual violence. State reluctant to intervene in private affairs of family. Common law hands off except to intervene to uphold prerogatives of husbands or fathers as property. Status differences - women (and kids) property. Man of the house had all the rights of the family unit, wife and kids not so much people.
