Foundational concept of human rights: golden rule christianity, the idea that by being able to feel what someone else does you will have a better understanding of what those violations mean. People expect- 3 foundations of human rights that come from the golden rule: physical integrity, moral integrity, equality, human rights law whether international or domestic derive from this . States occupy the top realm in international law. World war one started states scrutinizing how people were treated in their own territory. First international organization (international labor organization) & universal decleration of human rights. Toonen case- gay man who came from the only state where it was illegal to be gay. He took his case to law at the international level. This is something new after ww1 that people could go above there government and appeal to international. After ww11 the human rights laws were actually put into writing and governed by international law that protects the rights of individuals.
