Chapter 7 : basic values and their protection. Basic values are values that societies consider to be especially important. Most important phenomena of our time is the tendency to protect basic values by recognizing them as legal rights. Basic values may focus mainly on individuals, groups, or society as a whole. Individual values include freedom of speech and conscience, and religion. Society values include law and order, security, education, and social welfare. Individual worth & dignity (=rather more liberty) Notion of community (=& rather more equality) To recognize these values (=which means: protect them) In law so they become rights in two forms: in simple law (=statute) E. g. human rights codes, or statutory bills of rights: or even in constitutional law: e. g. the charter. It demands that government be conducted in accordance with established and performance norms. Its voice remains silent or whispered on the issues of substantive policies.
