Families of victims would initiate proceedings and penalties themselves. They are likely to receive bail unless they have broken bail orders or have committed a serious offenc. Victim only participates in bail hearing if they are a danger to the victim: trial: both prosecutor and defense are able to call on any witness that they feel will benefit them, even victim. Counsel may only cross-examine the other counsel"s witness: sentencing: Judge reaches conviction number through many different factors: victim impact statements, compensation: to sue an individual or go to civil court. Increasing mandatory minimum sentences: justin bourque. Received life sentence with out possibility of parole for 75yrs. Rather then previously capping at 25 it can now be anywhere from 25-75 years.
