Classical approach to the study of law: determination of rules, principles and procedures through the detailed analysis of cases: this is generally the approach taken in law schools and by lawyers. Studying law in action (legal realist: calling attention to the gaps between doctrine and practice, beyond oicial accounts to examine the ways in which law actually afects people"s lives, very few realists. Now, most critical theorists see legal doctrines and societies are seen as intimately interconnected (post- doctrinal studies) We now recognize that the meaning of legal rules not only resides in the principles and values they contain, but also in the ways rules are distributed, achieved and changed. Post-doctoral (academia: general considerations: more inclusive considerations between law and surrounding societies: shifting our attention outward and downward from the top of the law. Law is seen here as a plural, not an singular phenomenon.
