The inspiration for my wampum belt came from rebecca thomas" poem etuaptmumk. Although her poem"s subject revolves around the tarnished relationship between indigenous peoples and the british empire, who she refers to specifically, certain lines in the poem connected to me. While reading the poem repeatedly, i found myself thinking of the relationship. It is positive, reciprocal relationship and i often consider her my best friend. However, being six and a half years apart, it can feel like she is further ahead on the path than me. I chose to only include one row of beads because my sister and i have experienced a majority of our lives together and i try to follow her footsteps while navigating the trials and tribulations i encounter. She is the first person i reach out to for advice, so that is why there is only one path.
