Mongols only came as a temporary force. Todays lecture will explain how and why moscow would rise to glory. Never assigned a prince by kiev; avoided much quarreling because of this. A prince invited for a mighty feast. Significant as a defense point for suzdel. Alexander nevsky, grand prince in 13th century, gave moscow to youngest son daniel, who stayed there and build it up. River policy: expanded along the moscow river through devious means. Murdered and forced his way through this. In doing so, picked up kolomna in s and pereiaslav in ne from mongol problems. Daniel succeeded by iurii in 1303, who continued to capture area around. Iurii bribed the khan and married one of his sisters to gain mongol support. Named grand prince, which was moved to vladimir. 14th century, deserved by tver and got in a war with iurii. Marched w/ moscow army and mongol troops to face tver and tver fled.
