Ideal of men proving themselves worthy, hand-to-hand combat, courage: decisive victory became a war of attrition/war of defense (stalemate) Importance of technology: machine guns trench warfare, reconnaissance plans, barbed wire. *men and women"s lives different from expectations. Injuries challenged views of soldiers; what it meant to be a warrior/man. Psychological trauma anxiety, facial ticks, etc. Charles myers, 1917, shell shock no visible, physical injury but still trauma. Repression of trauma was seen as the cause.
