Wily willie he certainly was, a cunning practitioner of politics high and low, and that was his reputation when he died in 1950. Then it was slowly revealed that he led what seems to many of us an eccentric lifestyle. Willie has come to trump wily willie in the popular and sometimes in the academic imagination. It"s sad because he asked to not have the diaries known to anyone.
