No clear physical essence, but can be defined or informed by social interaction. Something we continue to describe and define, remaining in our memories. Changes depending on time and people/things associated with it. Everyone may have different memories of the same place depending on experience. The world is more open ended, porous, having different shapes. Reflects different experiences of those who lived there as well as the number of external discourses, relations, contexts in which it functions. Not a fixed entity, but is dynamic and multifaceted, influenced by many changing and multiplying factors. More difficult to define as people become more interconnected. Space-time compression, distance is becoming less of a factor as speed of communication and transportation increases. Must recognize the issues of power, difference between the powerful and powerless, Importance in investigating multiple discourses of place and identity and be challenged and redefined.
