Majority of the world"s population lives in urban areas. An increasing proportion lives in urban areas: 1800 less than 5, 1950 50, 2007 50, 2010 52, 2030 60% By 2050, 7 in 10 people will live in urban areas. Every year world"s urban population increases by approximately 60 million people: most of this in low and middle-income countries. Asia home to half of the world"s urban population: 66 out of 100 of the fastest-growing urban areas. Africa has a larger urban population than north america or western europe: more than 6 in 10 africans who live in urban areas reside in slums. Changing the definitions of urban areas over time make comparative studies difficult. An area with a minimum population concentration of 1,000 persons and a popul least 400 persons per square kilometre. Agglomerations of 5,000 or more inhabitants where 75% of the economic act agricultural.
