Document Summary
Large bodies of air with fairly uniform temperature & moisture characteristics. Define air masses based on their location source. Fronts are the boundaries that sperate air masses with different temperatures & other characteristics. Most often the boundary represents the boundary between polar & tropical air. Cold air typically more dense, the two bodies don"t mix well together. Instead the denser air remains near the surface & forces the warm air up. Boundaries between air of unlike temperatures (fronts) migrate, warmer air is pushed aloft (frontal lifting) Cold front: cold air advances towards warm air and warm air is displaced vertically by cooler air. Warm front: warm air advances towards cold air and gently rises on it . Cold air mass forces the warm air mass aloft, often forming a line of clouds or thunder lines (squall lines) Squall lines: a narrow band of high winds and storms associated with a cold front.
