GEOG 1010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Suspended Load, Drainage Basin, Bed Load
Document Summary
They also erode, flood, & sculpt the landscape around them. Drainage basin (watershed) is the area that surrounds the stream and drains into it. Stream discharge: the amount of water (volume) flowing through the channel per unit of time. Flowing water all the time, erodes particles from its bed & banks. Mas movement event on slopes surrounding stream, can add large quantities. Bedload: large grains that cannot be picked up, but still are able to be moved. They roll, bounce, and slide along the bottom. Suspended load: small sediment grains that mix with the flowing water are transported above the bed, rarely touch bottom, and can make the water cloudy or muddy. Ions in solution from chemical weathering are also carried by water in streams. Picking up & moving of particles requires work & expends energy. Alluvium: bed of stream is loose & moved easily. Bedrock stream: bed is cut into solid rock.
