Little person in head that does all things that a human can do. A dumber machine that can explain what we are doing, instead of a full-blown human inside brain. Has endpoint, a machine that performs very basic tasks. Note: most research in pattern recognition is concerned with visual pattern recognition. When we do see things that are familiar, we can recognize them quickly. Template: a stored, unanalyzed pattern or model to which incoming information is matched in order to be recognized and classi ed. Implications: representations di er for everyone, unlimited number of templates, position/orientation limits, sheer number of templates necessary is enormous, can"t easily explains errors, di cult explaining how one thing can be seen in more than one way. An approach that describes patterns in terms of their parts. Have to be able to break patterns down into their constituent parts. We can tell patterns apart by looking at how they di er.
