Formula plot is the basic conflict that is familiar to viewers, one or two sentence definition that encompasses a specific genre, serves as basis for each film to deviate from. Iconography are objects that simply by their presence are important to the plot, can draw meaning from other sources, ex certain objects in movie posters tell us what genre they are going to be before we actually know.
