ERTH 2415 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Seismic Wave, Hypocenter, Seismometer
Document Summary
Earthquakes are caused by sudden movements along faults. Stress builds up over several years before enough energy is stored to cause rupture. Slide 9: rock tries to accommodate the push, and it will rupture. Then they become offset and the sun is the hypocentre. The p-waves are always the fastest, followed by the s-waves. Faults: fracture across which two blocks of rock move relative to each other. Faults found in several tectonic environments prone to large earthquakes. Major faults extend several kms in the subsurface, and are very long. Most faults do not have a surface expression (we do not see them because many are in the subsurface. The rideau rapids: surface expression of the gloucester faults: There are rapids and those are the surface expression of the faults. It continues under the museum of nature. Disturbed rocks that are unorganized are the fault zones (irregular rough surface)
