Intensity: measure of the effects of an earthquake on people and infrastructure. Mercalli intensity scale: descriptive and subjective scheme based on, eye witness accounts, damage to infrastructure, twelve divisions (i to xii) of increasing intensity. Intensity: measure of the effects of an earthquake on people and infrastructure: magnitude: amount of energy released during an earthquake, for a given earthquake, there are several intensity values (depending on the location) but only one magnitude. Intensity requires an audience; magnitude requires only the divine power of machines - Shakemap: shakemap: intensity map generated automatically in near-real time using data from seismograph stations. Inputs: ground motion data, knowledge of regional geology, output: computed intensity, powerful tool for emergency response.
