ENVE 4105 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Volumetric Heat Capacity, Passive House, Passive Solar Building Design
Document Summary
Solar gains-useful, but implies overheating and sun shining on occupants. Daylighting is useful but if too bright it produces glare. Airflow-useful but building operators don"t like them because people leave them open. Heat loss- reduced cooling costs/increase heating costs. All 3 forms of heat transfer apply to windows happens in winter, and they freeze open. Radiation-short wave passes through mostly, some is reflected. Windows with dividers are bad because they have more thermal bridging. Many small windows are better for daylighting purposes, you don"t get one big ray of light. One big window is better for thermal reasons, because the frame has a u value 3x higher than the glass. 3 window metrics (solar energy either transmitted, reflected or absorbed) The amount of heat that is transmitted. Curtain wall/ window wall not structural, bad thermally. Use natural free forces to reduce energy use and improve occupant comfort. Not rely heavily on occupants to make a building function properly.
