Engl 2108 a: lecture 2, elements of fiction. Person represented in dramatic or narrative works who are interpreted by readers as being endowed with specific moral, dispositional and emotional qualities. Author manipulates what the character says and does to generate a specific reaction from the reader. Writer, reader and text= the trinity- they all work together, reason why each one is done is due to another in the circle. Types of literary characters: flat characters- 2d, type , built around single idea or quality, not much individualized detail, adequately described in a single phrase, often minor characters. Often stereotypes, easy to put into a story quickly- e. g. the wicked stepmother: round characters- complex in temperament and motivation, difficult to describe adequately, capable of surprising us, complex and dynamic, subject to development. Methods of characterization: showing (dramatic method)- author has characters talking and acting, reader infers meaning (often obvious), motivation, disposition.
