Document Summary

Anderson: he lived in a community where the spoken stories were still told, so he was able to educate himself properly. Ruskin: he only wrote essays, not a ctional writer. Critiques assume that he wrote the story for strictly personal reasons. Ruskin read the grimm fairytales: came to appreciate them by reading. Cinderella = piety; family; nature v. the step-sisters = greed; materialism; property. Golden = wealth (literal) v. river = nature. Built into the title is the idea of two competing value systems. The brothers beat gluck but the irony is they treat him better than they do the servants. Treasure valley: treasure in conjunction with gold suggests literal treasure, valley again refers to nature. Description of treasure valley: people call it that because food was considered richness. The older brothers do see it as a place of literal richness: kill anything that tries to eat from the valley.
