A self-selected, self-disciplined group of individuals who hold themselves out to the public as possessing a special skill derived from training and education and are prepared to exercise that skill in the interests of others. It is not the responsibility of the government, but is the responsibility of fellow engineers to make decisions. To indicate to clients and customers that these individuals are certified for their particular job. Ie: if you want someone to build a bridge, you want someone who is certified and is a good character. What it means to be a licensed professional. You have an exclusive, legal right to practice. Has nothing to do with the way you present yourself. His bridge was very thin, lacking support areas in the middle regions. All recognized professional bodies organize themselves into self-governing professional societies or associations. ie: professional engineers ontario (peo) They define the duties and responsibilities of their members.
